A youth basketball showcase to raise awareness for the Opioid Epidemic on Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod

MV Boat-to-the-Basket (B2TB) is a unique education-recreational program created to support the eradication of opioid addiction on the Cape Cod and Islands. B2TB hosts an annual youth basketball showcase on the beautiful island of Martha’s Vineyard to raise awareness about the Opioid Epidemic. We believe awareness of the opioid crisis should begin early, therefore, we use basketball as a learning tool to educate 6th, 7th and 8th graders regarding the tragic effects of substance use disorder (SUD).

Martha’s Vineyard Community Services (MVCS) MVCS is a nonprofit health and human services organization on Martha’s Vineyard. Children, families, teens and adults rely on MVCS for a broad range of services that support the overall health and well-being of the Island community.

MVCS acts as fiscal sponsor for the Martha’s Vineyard Substance Use Disorder  Coalition (MV SUD) which aims to raise awareness, bridge service gaps, and decrease stigma of substance use disorder through education, prevention, treatment, and recovery efforts. B2TB partnered with the MV SUD Coalition to support their On Island  initiative aimed to build a community-led response to reduce substance misuse and de-stigmatize addiction, as well as prevent or delay first use among island youth.  Continued support of the MV SUD Coalition is essential for island residents who have lived with this devastating crisis that has landed the state of Massachusetts on the Top 10 list of the hardest states hit with opioid overdose deaths.
